Some things aren’t always black and white. Then again, sometimes they are – like the twin sons born July 11 to a German couple.

The first baby that was born, Ryan, has light skin and blue eyes. His brother, Leo, is dark-skinned with brown eyes.

"None of us could believe it," the maternity ward's head doctor, Birgit Weber, told one news source. "Both kids have definitely the same father."

Stephan Gerth is German and white. His wife, Florence Addo-Gerth, is from Ghana and has dark skin.

It was “a real surprise,” Gerth told the German newspaper Die Welt, adding that the most important thing to him isn’t color, but that everyone is healthy.

The odds are one in a million, say doctors, but it can happen with fraternal twins due the genetic soup in our backgrounds. Peter Propping, former director of the Institute for Human Genetics at Bonn University, told Die Welt that the black mother may have had some white ancestors, or that the white father may have had black ones. Very occasionally, the roll of the DNA die may cause the baby of biracial parents to inherit only the genetic coding for one color.

Rare though they are, the German twins do have some company. In the past few years, at least three mixed race couples have welcomed twins who were also black and white.

In 2005, British couple Kylie Hodgson and Remi Horder, both born to mixed-race parents, had twin girls – one who is blond and fair-skinned and one who has dark coloring.
In 2006, Kerry Richardson, who is of Nigerian and English descent, and her partner, who is white, gave birth to twins who were both born light-skinned. But as they got older, one got darker while the other got lighter.
Natasha Knight, of Australia, welcomed a blue-eyed blond baby girl and her sister, who has brown hair, eyes and dark skin in 2006. Knight’s older daughter has blond hair, blue eyes and light olive skin. Knight is of Jamaican and English descent; the father is German.

In 1993, another set of black and white twins was born to the Dutch couple, Wilma and Willem Stuart, but it turned out to be a case of an in-vitro mix-up. The parents, who are both Caucasian, were mystified when the twins were born, but fell deeply in love with both of them. However, after about a year, genetic tests revealed that while one of the twins was biologically related to both parents, the other twin was not.

The hospital called it a “deeply regrettable mistake.” It soon became apparent that a device similar to a large eyedropper had been used twice, causing another man’s sperm to be mixed with Willem’s. The couple remembers two other couples in the waiting room the day of the procedure. One of them was black.

Being of different races and coming from different fathers hasn’t stopped the Stuart boys from closely bonding. While the dark-skinned boy did eventually meet the man who was his biological father, the brothers consider themselves full twins. In 2005, they attended a twins festival and proudly won the “Least alike twins” award.”

“For the two boys, being celebrated for their differences finally answered all the questioning looks, nasty teasing, and outright expressions of disbelief they've endured all these years,” Wilma Stuart told Dateline, which has been following the family since 1993.

Stephan Gerth and Florence Addo-Gerth, the parents of the newest set of “black and white” twins, know they’ll face some incredulous stares.

"I imagine sitting in a playground where the other mothers will call me crazy when I tell them the boys are twins," Florence told www.peacefmonline.com.

Like all siblings, their differences are more than skin deep. The twins also have distinctly different personalities, say their parents. Leo, the dark-skinned baby, is quieter; Ryan, his light-skinned brother, is temperamental. "When he's hungry, he's hard to stop,” said the mother.

She says her children were born looking exactly as they should. "God has decided that my children should have different skin colors," she says.

How is meat linked to cancer?

The whole idea that meat might cause cancer came from several large European population studies back in the early 1990s showing that vegetarians were almost half as likely to develop cancer as meat eaters when controlling for other diet and lifestyle factors. Since then, studies have continued to investigate the link. While some of the evidence seems compelling, what exactly is it about meat that might be dangerous? Although it’s not entirely clear, there are a number of hypotheses:

Meat lacks fiber, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and other helpful nutrients that have shown to be protective against cancers.
Many meats are high in fat and other animal products that increase hormone production, thus increasing the risk of hormone-related cancers such as breast or prostate cancer.
High-protein diets have been linked to cancer. Meats are high in protein, and protein is broken down to ammonia, which may be carcinogenic in humans.
Cooking meats at high temperatures forms carcinogenic compounds such as heterocyclic amines (HCA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These compounds have proven carcinogenic in mice, rats and nonhuman primates in lab studies.
Salt-preserved, smoked and other preserved meats contain N-nitroso compounds (NOCs) that are potentially carcinogenic to humans.

Which meats are of concern?

While many studies have identified general meat intake as a risk factor for cancer, specifically the red meats like beef, lamb, pork, veal, and processed meats (meats preserved by salting, drying, smoking or curing), appear to put consumers at highest risk and have been the subject of most studies.

However, it’s not only the type of meat that is a cause for concern, but also the way in which it’s prepared. The cooking method, temperature and time all influence how carcinogenic certain meats are. Meats cooked at very high temperatures by frying, broiling and barbecuing produce the largest amount of HCAs, whereas oven roasting and baking are done at lower temperatures and thus form less HCAs. Stewing, boiling or poaching are done at such a low temperature that dangerous chemicals do not form.

Lastly, cooking for longer periods of time (for example, making a steak that’s well-done,) will cause more carcinogenic compounds to be formed than cooking for shorter periods of time, for example, making a steak that’s “bloody.” Just remember that undercooking meats can be dangerous, leading to food poisoning or other infection.

Are organic meats safer than conventional industrial meats?

Organic meats come from animals that are grown without growth additives or antibiotics. Whether organic meats are safer than nonorganic meats has never really been proven. Generally speaking, the amount of steroidal hormones found in meat is miniscule compared to those amounts that are known to increase the risk of cancer. The FDA even argues that leftover residues of growth additives in meat, specifically beef, are negligible in comparison to natural levels in both cows and humans.

To err on the side of caution, pregnant women and prepubescent children may want to avoid inorganic meats. Similarly, individuals may want to buy rBGH-free or certified organic milk and dairy products. rBGH is a growth hormone that some say causes cancer, although this has been largely disputed. More importantly, the use of antibiotics in animals increases the amount of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment, which can have long-term consequences on human health in the future.

Do hotdogs cause childhood leukemia?

Back in 1994, several studies implicated hot dogs in raising the risk of childhood leukemia. While the results of the most recent study, the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study (NCCLS), showed no increased risk, parents may choose to have their children avoid nitrate-containing hot dogs just to be safe. Nitrates are used as preservatives in many processed meats, including bacon, and lead to the formation of those potentially carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds (NOCs).

What types of cancers are linked to meat?

Colorectal cancer has been studied most extensively and linked most conclusively to both red and processed meats. Consumption of these meats seems to cause a modest increase in risk of colorectal cancer. Men who eat red meat frequently also appear to have a higher risk of prostate cancer. Lastly, frequent consumption of red meat may raise the risk of breast cancer in women. Aside from these three, various other cancers including stomach, pancreatic, kidney, and esophageal have been linked to consumption of meat (although not as consistently).

How can I reduce my risk?

The National Cancer Institute provides some recommendations to reduce exposure to HCAs in meat:

Vary methods of cooking meats.
Microwave meats more often, especially before frying, broiling or barbecuing.
Refrain from making gravy from meat drippings (a substantial source of HCAs).

Aside from that, to reduce the risk of cancer from meat one should:

Increase consumption of fruits, vegetables and fish while limiting consumption of red and processed meats.
Select meats that are lean, low-fat or fat-free.

While from a cynical point of view this may hold some truth, it’s no reason to avoid common sense and practice unhealthy eating habits. Instead, practice the art of moderation. It might be impossible for you to avoid meat, and it’s understandable because barbecued meat is, well... divine. However, try to vary your food sources. After all, variety is the spice of life.

The invisibility is just a stone's throw away!!! Dr. Susumu Tachi, a scientist at Tokyo University, is hard at work on a ground-breaking piece of tech that could very well be one of mankind's greatest achievements ... until it's used by chronic masturbators to peer in on your sexual exploits, that is.

What Tachi has done is create the fabled invisibility cloak through the usage of a camera that records a background image. This Background image is then projected via a device that scientists have dubbed a "Projector" that actually "projects" the background image on to a screen.

Here's where the real science comes in to play: This projection can only be seen on a special material known as retro-reflectum, a material made-up of thousands of tiny beads that were specially designed to capture the projected image. This retro-reflectum allows a projected image to be seen in three dimensions or, rather, to be projected in three dimensions. The image wraps around the cloak wearing subject, thus, creating a sense of blending in with the moving background.

Tachi envisions a future where such a system lets pilots look right through the floor of a plane's cockpit to see the ground (or, you could do the same with the passengers if you wanted to fuck with them) or it could be used on surgical gloves, so surgeons can see through their own hands and get a full view of the operation.

Time magazine even dubbed it one of the "Coolest Inventions" of 2003, saying it would be on the market by 2008, so it's a little late.

Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time."

The original ending of the film showed Neville trapped in his laboratory as vampires try to break through his doors and try to smash the glass wall. But this is what originally happened...

The original version showed that the vampires weren't really there for a beat down on Neville. They were really there to rescue the woman that he had captured earlier.

The book really ended that way (would you beleive?) and that was actually the point of the entire thing!

The "Improved" Version:
Because test audiences apparently didn't like the original ending, the studio opted to go with a new one in which Neville fights back against the vampires to protect his new allies. He does so by igniting a grenade about two inches from their face, destroying the once-safe stronghold and severely injuring his companions. It should also be noted that going by the original ending, Will Smith just murdered scores of reasoning creatures who were attempting to rescue a little girl.

This brings up the other problem, which is that all of the little hints that had been inserted along the way indicating the creatures had intelligence (the complex traps they set, the same creature reappearing in some kind of leadership role) are completely ignored. In the new ending, the vampires are mindless savages with no other purpose but general horror movie mayhem.

Perhaps the saddest thing about all this is that it shows that no one involved really believed in the message of the final product. They didn't produce a film in order to convey any kind message, they just strung together a bunch of cool scenes and called it a movie. One more reason why audience feedback isn't always the best guide, as anyone who has read YouTube comments will happily tell you.

The original ending is available as a bonus scene on the recent DVD release, where it is advertised as the "controversial original ending." Yes, coming to a peaceful reconciliation with your enemies is now more controversial than blowing them right the fuck up.
